Why are soy candles so great?
Soy candles are natural since they’re made from soy beans. Whereas, paraffin candles are made from petroleum oil. As a result, soy wax candles do not increase the CO2 level in the atmosphere like paraffin candles do. Furthermore, soy candles do not require chemicals to scent them.
Soy wax candles may cost more than paraffin wax candles, however they burn around 50% longer than paraffin candles.
How can I get the most burn time out of Soy Candles?
Prevent tunnelling to get the most time out of your soy candles. When burning the candle you have to burn it long enough to allow the melt pool to extend all the way out to the outer edge of the candle so you utilize all the wax. Otherwise, it can cause a tunnel in your wax, and you lose a lot of wax. The first time you light your candle may take the longest time for the top layer to completely melt.
What does tunnelling look like?
- This is what tunnelling looks like, the outer wax of the candle is wasted and the wax will continue to tunnel down, reducing the burn time of your candle!
- If you prefer lighting your candles for a shorter period of time, then you will save money and wax by buying a smaller size candle, as it takes a shorter period of time for the top layer of wax to melt, thus saving wax.
- Make sure every time you light your candle the top layer is completely melted!
Why is it important to trim the wicks?
Trimming the wicks is very important, but don't trim it too short. Trimming the wicks will keep the candle burning without any black soot and it will give your candle a longer burn time. When the wick starts to bend or form a ball at the top, you know it's time to cut it.
When a wick gets too long it cannot draw wax all the way up to the top of the wick. Therefore, the wick itself will start to burn. Even with Pure Integrity 100% cotton wicks and petro-soot free Soy Wax, you will see some soot if your wicks start burning themselves.
However do not cut your wicks too short, otherwise the flame will not reach to the outer layer of wax and tunnelling can occur. Do not cut your six shorter than 0.5cm.
How should I trim my cotton wick & how often?
A cotton should be trimmed to a 1/4 inch (0.5cm) every time before you light your candle. You can use scissors, nail clippers, or candle wick cutters.
A wooden wick should be trimmed a lot shorter (1/8 of an inch). Wooden wicks need to be very short, as they need the candle wax to reach the flame to continue burning, otherwise they will go out. They should be trimmed every 4 hours.
What is a wooden wick?
A wooden wick is exactly what it sounds like! A wick made out of wood. A wooden wick makes a nice crackling sound when lit, it also has a unique long flame. Wooden wicks need to be cut very short to work. If you would like a wooden wick instead of a cotton wick, please write that in the order notes. We only have wooden wicks for our medium candle size.
Paraffin wax compared to our 100% Soy wax
Most candles are made from paraffin wax, paraffin wax is extremely cheap wax, which is why they are so cheap. Paraffin wax is refined gasoline. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, paraffin wax is harmful when burned and contains toxins – two that are considered above the excess cancer risk with multiple exposures. This is why we use a 100% soy wax formulation for Purposeful Candles Soy Candles. It can also cause black marks on your walls and furniture, this is also going inside your lungs. Although paraffin wax has a stronger scent to soy, it is extremely harmful to breathe in.
How do I know If my candle is Soy?
The majority of candles today are made with cheaper paraffin wax, a petroleum by-product or a combination of both. We use 100% soy wax! A great way to tell is by its outward appearance. Soy wax tends to look creamy and soft, sometimes with subtle white discolorations and unique natural markings on the surface of the candle. Paraffin wax has a transparent texture, sometimes with dark discolorations and bubbles or craters on the top.
Do all your candles have different fragrance strengths?
Yes, they do. Under each candle on our website, it will have a scale of how strong the candle smells. This ranges from weak, medium, and strong. Some people prefer a subtle smell, whereas others prefer a strong scent that will fill the room. All our candles have 10% of fragrance infused in the wax, this is the maximum amount of fragrance you can add to the wax without the wax and fragrance separating from each other. Although all our candles use 10% of fragrances, some fragrances are weaker than others, naturally. For example our sweet scents naturally smell stronger than our citrus scents.
Soy candles typically do not smell as strong as paraffin wax candles, this is due to soy wax being more dense than paraffin wax. However, the benefits of soy are evident.
